Featured Artist – Gi Myao
Artwork by Gi Myao
How and when did you know that you wanted to become an illustrator?
After I graduated from St Martins I decided I didn’t want to work for others and planned to set up my own fashion design studio. Unexpectedly a fashion editor stumbled upon my portfolio and suggested I should be a fashion illustrator.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
As a child, I loved to look at stacks and stacks of illustrated children books that my mum had bought for me. It really kept my brain active and creative. Then I grew up and trained as a fashion designer, the way I look at fashion and people who love fashion gives me inspiration.
What is your earliest memory of creating art? (or drawing as a child)
Not sure about creating art, but I started to draw using my mum’s Chanel lipstick at four years. Then I heard my mum yelling “Someone give her a pen!”
What type of environment do you prefer to work in? At home or in a studio? Listening to music?
At my Chocolate Studio in London with my dog sleeping under my desk. Along with many creative and artistic people in the area yet still the area is chilled and not-so-serious.
I never listen to music when I work. I need to work in a place I feel relaxed and very quiet.
Who was the first illustrator that you noticed and admired?
I love illustrations that are organic and personal, like the old days. They should be honest and straight-up, it’s about the way you see the world. Jean-Jacques Sempé and Hilary Knight are good examples.
How do you deal with negative criticism?
It’s all part of the game, I do what I’m told if that helps to finish the job.
